mindset: The New Psychology of Success

I needed to read mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck, PhD. for the beginning of teacher's in-service. This books explains the difference between a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset.  A growth mindset means that people are more focused on learning and bettering themselves through hard work. Whereas, a fixed mindset focuses on success as being about talent and not hard work. While there are many talking points in this book, I wanted to focus on one about teachers. Seymour Sarason says:

"There's an assumption," he said, "that schools are for students' learning. Well aren't they just as much for teachers' learning?"

There are two takeaways for me in this statement: One, that each year I am always learning better teaching techniques and better ways to do my job. Two, that I get to learn new facts and develop deeper understandings in Math, Science, Social Studies, History.  I get to read new books learn knew things. The reason I love my job so much is that often I am learning right alongside with my students.
